THE SIXTY-NINE UNKNOWNS
A GlitchyMatrix Assessment of the UNIDENTIFIED Cases in Project Blue Book, 1945–1969

GlitchyMatrix Project Blue Book Archive - GM Analysis Radar Screen

Sixty-nine of 10,808. That is 0.638 percent. The United States Air Force spent twenty-four years processing aerial phenomenon reports from military and civilian observers, applied a classification system with more than a dozen categories, and came back saying we cannot explain this for less than one case in every one hundred and fifty they handled. For every UNIDENTIFIED in the archive, there are roughly 149 cases where they found an answer — weather balloons, aircraft, astronomical objects, radar anomalies. When the answer was available, they used it. When it wasn’t, they filed it.

The GlitchyMatrix Project Blue Book Archive has now completed individual case evaluations for all 69 UNIDENTIFIED-classified files in the 10,808-case declassified archive. Every one. The capstone synthesis — The Sixty-Nine UNKNOWNS — represents the analytical endpoint of that project: what the full corpus actually looks like when you read it carefully, sort it honestly, and stop treating UNIDENTIFIED as a single uniform category. It isn’t.

Lt. Carey's hand-drawn diagram of Incident #151 - Indianapolis 1948 - Project Sign Take Incident #151. Indianapolis, Indiana. July 29, 1948. Two civilians on a routine delivery route crossing a bridge over Fall Creek watch a broad two-bladed propeller-shaped object glide silently at treetop level — 30 feet altitude, 25–30 mph, no sound, no exhaust, no rotation. A military intelligence officer physically searched the wooded terrain. Found nothing. The object’s shape was specific enough that AMC routed the case all the way to General Electric to ask whether their classified Hermes I roto-chute program could account for it. Igor Bensen himself — the device’s designer — reviewed the file and issued a categorical denial. Project Blue Book’s own scientific consultant, Dr. J. Allen Hynek, placed this case in his highest unexplained confidence category: evidence offered suggests no explanation.

Two days later and a few miles away, Incident #152: a cymbal-shaped object, 20 feet in diameter, estimated 1,800 mph, seen for 10 seconds from a kitchen window. Hynek noted that the two Indianapolis incidents — two days apart, same city, similar aspect ratios from different angles — might represent the same object. Nobody followed up on that.

Matador Texas 1951 - pear-shaped object witness sketch - A-2 rated case Or consider Matador, Texas, August 1951. Two women, outside their car on US Highway 70, 125–200 yards from a pear-shaped silver object the size of a freight shed hovering at 150-foot altitude. No sound. No exhaust. No wings. What appeared to be a door or window at its tapered end. The Air Force rated the source A-2 — completely reliable, information probably true — the highest evaluation in their system. Multiple OSI field investigators. Multiple independent character checks. Consistent accounts across every retelling. The investigators correctly ruled out balloon. Nothing else fit either. The case file evaluator wrote, after everything had been checked: the transition from slow low-altitude drift to rapid circular ascent in seconds is not a property of any known aircraft, balloon, or atmospheric phenomenon.

This is what the archive looks like at its best: meticulous field work, high observer credibility ratings, wind data, balloon exclusion by confirmation, and still no answer. The GlitchyMatrix evaluation corpus has worked through 69 cases like this one — sorting which UNIDENTIFIED designations were earned through rigorous elimination, which were administrative defaults for thin data, and which were frankly wrong in either direction.

Washington DC 1961 Diamond Case - witness engineering diagram of proposed propulsion mechanism Then there is Washington D.C., December 13, 1961 — Hynek called it the Diamond Case. A 44-year-old Navy flight instructor with nine years of aviation experience stood on E Street NW and watched a diamond-shaped object cross directly overhead at 1,200 feet. Completely silent. No navigation lights. No visible propulsion. He ruled out helicopter, blimp, temperature inversion, and sun reflection by name — because those were things his profession required him to recognize. He went back to the same spot afterward and retraced the path. He drew an engineering diagram proposing a propulsion mechanism. He told Hynek he could not reconcile what he saw with any aircraft he knew. Hynek personally followed up, named the case, and left the cause open. A military teletype was filed the following morning. For a man as practiced at providing conventional explanations as Hynek was in 1961, that silence was its own data point.

Homer New York 1964 - Incident 8739 - watercolor painting binoculars closeup frame showing tapered elongated object Not every case in the archive is a radar track or a military intercept. Incident #8739, Homer, New York, April 1964 is one of the more unusual evidentiary records in the entire Blue Book collection — not for raw strangeness but for what the witness did to document it. Seven sequential watercolor paintings, each with a dual register: landscape context showing position in sky, inset closeup showing shape detail. One frame explicitly labeled Closeup as seen through binoculars. The binoculars frame shows a dark, tapered, elongated object — no wing, no empennage, no fuselage symmetry. Paintings five and six show the same object transformed into a cluster of five to six spheres of varying sizes, some solid, some fading to outlines. No conventional 1964 aircraft does that. No optical illusion produces five separate spheres where a single tapered form was. The Air Force held the UNIDENTIFIED classification in the 1964 period when the program’s default was to explain everything away. Something about the evidence — and presumably the missing companion narrative — made that impossible.

Pueblo Colorado 1958 - US Weather Bureau meteorologist theodolite azimuth plot - Saturn-shaped UNKNOWN And then there is Pueblo, Colorado, June 14, 1958 — probably the most precisely documented single observation in the corpus. A US Weather Bureau meteorologist with 28 years of theodolite experience was tracking a pilot balloon when an unknown object entered the instrument’s field of view. He timed it with the same precision buzzer he used for balloon measurements. He recorded entry and exit azimuth and elevation. He watched it pass above scattered cirrus, blurring slightly as it did, proving it was above 30,000 feet. It moved from northeast to southwest. Upper-level winds that day ran from the southwest. The object moved against its own wind field. No balloon does 500 mph. No balloon ignores wind. This man had watched balloons through that instrument for 28 years, and he said so directly: It was a material, artificial object, and not a balloon. Watching balloons is part of my regular duties. Captain George Gregory, then directing Project Blue Book, described it as a toughie, ran every check, asked for Hynek (unavailable — he was in Moscow), ran a satellite correlation that came back negative on orbital geometry grounds, and concluded: valid UNKNOWN.

These five cases represent perhaps 15 minutes of reading from an archive of 10,808 files. The full GlitchyMatrix corpus covers all 69 UNIDENTIFIED cases in the same depth — case by case, form by form, witness by witness. The capstone synthesis examines what the corpus shows as a whole: the patterns of silence at close range that no conventional aircraft of the era shared, the wind-vector eliminations that rule out passive aerostatic objects on physical grounds, the radar cases where calibrated instruments tracked things that no human eye had to interpret, and the institutional record of a program that was sometimes rigorous, sometimes imperfect, and occasionally caught revising its own conclusions on retroactive paperwork.

The bottom line: The UNIDENTIFIED cases of Project Blue Book are not uniform. Most reflect administrative default. A meaningful number reflect genuine analytical difficulty. A smaller number — the hard core — are cases where the evidence itself, honestly read, does not resolve. That group is real, it is documented, and it has never been satisfactorily explained. The Air Force closed the program in 1969 and declared there was nothing to see. The meteorologist with 28 years of theodolite experience was not consulted. Neither were the MIT radar professionals, the T-33 pilots who got within 1,000 feet of lights that should have been on radar and weren’t, or the Navy flight instructor who went back to E Street and drew an engineering diagram trying to understand what had crossed overhead.

They filed their reports. The Air Force filed them. The National Archives preserved them. The GlitchyMatrix Project Blue Book Archive published all 10,808, and evaluated the 69 that couldn’t be closed.

Pardon our dust as we grow to serve you better

We are back! I have finally completed the server migration for the complete family of DeBurger Photo Image & Design's website destinations.
Of course BlogDogit.com was priority-one, since that is the source of all my ad revenue, so to speak <*wink*> but once it was going again (a story in itself) it was Oaklandon calling for my attention.

Both BlogDogIt and Oaklandon are running in the latest version of GeekLog [2.2.2] and just so you know, that version is not compatible with PHP 8.2.28 without some programmatic tweaking ;) <= it had to be said.</p>

We have lost our media gallery plug-in feature but hopefully that can be restored since it contained some really good resources for Oaklandon fans.

The biggest problem I've seen has been the occasional missing post - triggering "404" errors. If you come across a missing resource I would appreciate a heads-up. All resources have been backed-up so it is likely a case of misplaced fileage.

For now I have disabled the ability to register/join this online community website. However, if you wish to sign up for creative access please email/pm me through provided channels.

ORI.NET - Your Local Internet Partner Since 1996The process of migrating to another server has involved moving several websites and is a far-cry from over as I work through related issues as they pop up. I suppose the challenges involved are the reason I even run these joints to begin with ;)  Check out DeBurger.com for the many on-line destinations now hosted, from right here in the neighborhood, via the premium services of On Ramp Indiana*. We are so happy to be back home again in Indiana - Oaklandon in particular.

°±²Û OBJECTIVE / STORYLINE

Pilot your home-made airborne caveman aircraft to pick others up and drop
them to their desired destinations. Very fun game!

°±²Û COMMENTS / OPINION

Ugh. You probably won't believe it, but this game is really cool! It's only
approx. 150k zipped up, and is only around 430k decompressed. But it's a hell
of a game - quite addictive. It's also very fun with the Gravis Gamepad just
piloting the airborne elevator around. <Heh> The graphics anything special -
they're pretty cute actually.

The story is that you, the cave(gentle)man, wants a cool chick. In order to
get the chick to like you, you need money. I guess by being an elevator man
or more a taxi driver, you can earn money. Basically, you go around picking
cave dudes and bring them to their desired destinations. But of course it's
not as easy as it sounds. If you fly too fast, you might crash into the stony
platforms and kill yourself. 'Don't land on your customers, or you'd have to
pick them up from the water (or jus let them drown! <evil smile>) Pick up the
stone and drop it on the tree to earn yourself more time. If the rhinos are
in your way, or if the birds are annoying you, drop a stone on them and
disable them (for a few secs). On various levels, there'll be rain, sometimes
there'll two birds, and sometimes, no trees! So be careful and use your time
wisely. Patience is the major key to this game. Well, great game overall!

Have fun!

Well, this was quite a fun game. It may get frustrating at times,
so you need quite a lot of patience for this game. Here are the pass codes
'just in case you can't get pass a certain level. There are 69 levels in
all. Some of these passwords are really long and weird. Beats me how the
author came up with these, heh. Well, have fun!

Regular vs E-85 Price Equivulator

masodo's musings

85 percent EthanolFor several years now I have been driving a "Flex Fuel" vehicle - which means it can run on different blends of gasoline and ethanol. In my area I have a choice to use either Regular Unleaded or E-85 (85% ethanol fuel and 15% gasoline by volume.) The E-85 is typically priced substantially lower than Regular gas but there is a trade-off in that E-85 does not deliver the same mileage as Regular.

When fuel prices climb higher, the lower price of E-85 looks all the more attractive. However, it is hard to decide at the pump whether the lower cost is worth it, vis-à-vis the reduced fuel economy. In order to make an intelligent decision as to which would be more cost effective, I dusted off my limited javascript skills to devise this gizmo that painlessly compares the two options in terms of cost per mile.

Of course, it is up to you to discover your relative miles-per-gallon for each type of fuel. Once you are armed with that information you can enter those into the form below (my values are automatically inserted but you can change them to your own), along with the price of one or the other type fuel. Click the "EQUATE" button to learn the break-even price for the other.

From The Gopher Hole

The New Dig Icon"Eujinks woz ere" was a simple message left on the InfinitelyRemote.com GOPHER site GuestBook. Of course in this game, that is very much like a "BEEP" on the metal detector.

This time we dug up some pure gold... Enjoy!

In The Spotlight
SundialToo much time has passed since we last shined (shone?) the BlogDogIt spotlight on a worthy internet destination but, as luck would have it, someone from the mysterious world of the fringe internet has seen fit to mention our sister site, InfinitelyRemote.com, as a prime example of the treasure trove of internet goodness that may be had when touring the obscure realm  of gopherspace [end run-on sentence here]

Below is a republishing of a thoughtfully written article about the simpler, side of internet life. This guy might really be on-to something here...

I think I did something good last week,in a way that's expanded my optimism about alternative ways of using the internet!

[Forgive me if I make any technical errors in the below; I’m passionate about computers and the old internet, but I’m far from an expert. If you are an expert on archaic networking terminology, please accept my outpouring of sincere love for the fruits of your personal interest as apologies for my ineptitude!!!]

So I’ve been messing around with a vintage 2001 iMac G3 for a while now (yes…computers released in the early 2000s are “vintage” now… the_future_is_now_old_man.jpg). I bought it a month or two ago, and had a lot of fun simply exploring Mac OS 9 and loading images onto its beautiful CRT screen. Unfortunately, I was clueless about how to actually mount disk images, a required step in order to install most of the abandonware available for free download online; special thanks to Macintosh Repository and Macintosh Garden! I finally made a breakthrough when I located MR’s FAQ section and figured out how to do it, but that’s not what this post is about.

Now that I was using the iMac more regularly, I also spent more time in Classilla, the most recently-updated (to my knowledge) web browser for classic Mac OS. It actually received its final official update just last year. While exploring Floodgap’s website (they host the servers for Classilla’s front page, and may have been involved in its development? I can’t remember, sorry), I found a door to a whole “new” realm of the internet: Gopher.
