The ability to move single atoms — the smallest particles of any element in the universe — is crucial to IBM's research in the field of atomic memory. But even nanophysicists need to have a little fun. In that spirit, IBM researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope to move thousands of carbon monoxide molecules (two atoms stacked on top of each other), all in pursuit of making a movie so small it can be seen only when you magnify it 100 million times. One can easily imagine Al Capone admiring the gams of some young tomato while setting around the juice joint plotting his next caper. He would razz you and likely tell you to dry up if you tried to suggest that someday dolls would be sporting this hotsy-totsy doo:

While the hairdo may not yet be a craze adopted by the majority of teens, it is certainly a spectacle to be revered for its creativity.

Riding A Space Shuttle Booster

I have always enjoyed the tips and suggestion presented on the RandomReveals web site so when they suggested I have a look at this "Mindblowing Video Taken From Space Shuttle During Launch"  I just knew it would be worth my while. At 8-1/2 minutes my first thought was this is a bit long for a random youtube forray but after hitting play I certainly enjoyed the ride. You should too.

This story is about the life of an Afro-American predisposed to chronic occurrences of diverse addictions. Not all of the addictions were alcohol and drug related; while some addictions were beneficial rather than detrimental. Over the years these addictions fluctuated and took on many forms of behaviors; which have been classified as personality disorders that have been psycho analyzed as being preoccupied, over indulged, obsessive and compulsive. These conditions have resulted in a lifelong journey of adverse and cordial circumstances that have unfolded into a most peculiar story. It is the elaboration of this story that are revealed in these writings.

These writings are arranged in a chronological sequence that covers a historical time-line starting at the dawn of World War II, and ends in the present—2012. The geographical territories span from the East Coast to the West Coast, and includes major U.S. cities such as: Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, Oakland and Denver. These narratives are intended to provide an insider’s view of binge alcoholism and hard-core drug use and dealings. In addition, other significant accounts from these memoirs include: 1) laboring in the hi-tech industry, 2) entertaining as a musician, 3) ministering as a cult buster, 4) ballroom dancing, and 5) being suspected as a counter-revolutionary.

Muhammed AliThe stories included here are all based on true events; however, similar to a typical movie script, a dispersal of fictitious incidents of adventure, drama and humor have been intermingled throughout for amusement. A statement of diversion that represents these writings is “All names have been changed to protect the guilty,” just opposite the lead in of the old Dragnet episodes. Moral standards of written expression are maintained throughout; there’s no foul language, nor detailed explicit sex. As an Afro-American raised in an eastern metropolitan urban enclave—Philadelphia—the social heritage from that environment is reflected throughout these writings.

So here is what this really is:

The chemical used is most likely Fluorescein which is a synthetic organic compound and has been in use for industrial applications for many years. It is a completely inert substance and dissipates in the environment (think large amounts of food coloring). In fact, one of the common names for it is D&C Yellow #7.

In this case this is coming from a storm and rainwater treatment system. This is part of the bi-annual inspections required by the EPA. One if the things they look for is where runoff actually goes to make sure there are not pollutants in those locations. That way if anything had been spilled on-site they know where the runoff would go. They then test water and soil samples wherever they see the green to ensure full compliance with the vast array of rules, laws and regulations. Bottom line, when you see this you know someone is doing their job.

As for locations, although I am not certain, I would bet 100 Karma points this is at one of the facilities in Louisiana. And just in case anyone is still worried about the environmental impact, note this is the same dye that is used to dye the Chicago River green on St. Patrick's day.

Testing Code for OpticalSpy

Welcome to the world of opticals

I found this pretty cool illusion over on opticalspy.com that showed the word "OPTICALSPY" written twice and partially obscured behind a chevron shape. The reader is instructed to identify the irregularity and that furthermore clicking the image would reveal the graphic sans chevron. I was impressed with the optical trickery and realized this illusion was a perfect candidate for my handy-dandy image swapping javascript snippet.

Always the "Helpful Hacker" - I assembled this demo to see if perchance this might be of interest to the editor of said source post. Sure enough the code has been utilized. Now rather than having to click the image to remove the chevron, simply hovering over it will remove the obstruction (clicking action has been maintained for the "touchy-feely" types.)

At first this sample code was visible only to registered users of BlogDogIt.com but since I recieved a "thanks for the code help" mention over there I decided to share this little bit of optical magic with my readers and encourage you to visit opticalspy.com for a truly extraordinary feast for the ol' ocular orbs.
