Home Brewed iPhone Amp

We definitely “have a thing” for electricity-free iPhone amps, and this lo-fi solution is made of PVC and an old bike horn! This is the absolute bees knees.

Thinking while cycling: about my life and about your life; about the things that matter and things that probably don’t.

"Cycling about 100 miles every week;
thinking as I go and writing it all down"

Fun

A dumped fast-food chain's cup with 'thirsty fun' written on it. It is not fun.
This is not fun.

Brilliant fun; great fun; excellent fun – really, really, bloody good fun. Jolly fun. Damn good fun. Simple fun or, maybe, innocent fun. Good, old-fashioned fun. Even fantastic fun if alliteration’s your thing. Any kind of fun you can think of – a fast-food-chain’s cup with ‘thirsty fun’ written on it is none of them. This is ‘fun’ eviscerated. This is fun abused. This renders the notion of fun wholly, utterly and completely meaningless. This is desecrated fun; debased fun. If this is now understood by anyone as fun, whoever they are, however old or young they are, where ever they are, however otherwise deprived of fun in any sensible sense of the word they are, then they have been cruelly conned. If I was feeling forgiving, I’d feel pity for the foul, fun-free, fun-wrecking individual responsible, because somewhere along the line, someone was.

Spotlight[Film]: Benend's Basement

• Certified Classic • Must See • One Time Watch • Not Recommended •
• Waste of Time • Cinematic Turd •

Just another twenty-something film graduate who resorted to writing a blog! I love films and I use my blog (Benend's Basement) to air my many opinions on the new release, and older, films that I see.

Bachelorette

Director: Leslye Headland
Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, Adam Scott, Rebel Wilson
Certificate: 18
Run-time: under 90 minutes

IN SHORT: An ill-conceived, offensive 'comedy' about three high-school bitches who never grew up. It's NOT Bridesmaids, more a failed female version of The Hangover with an alarming fixation on drugs and seemingly no moral compass.

2/10
CINEMATIC TURD

>>> SPOILERS SPOILERS <<<

At the moment, all I seem to do is *censored* and whine about films. Maybe I'm just watching the wrong ones? Or perhaps the studio's have lowered their quality control? Whatever it is, I'm back again with another damning review of a film that really doesn't have any redeeming qualities. It's hugely offensive, to the point where it actually affects your enjoyment of it, the storyline is muddled and the comedy is non-existent. The film is Bachelorette.

Bachelorette is an ensemble piece following Gena (Caplan), Regan (Dunst) and Katie (Fisher) as they meet up for Becky's (Wilson, or Kristen Wiig's 'English' flatmate in Bridsmaids) wedding. The girls have all known each other since high-school, although due to differing circumstances, they're not as close as they used to be. I believe the group referred to themselves as 'the 4 B's' or something to that affect. Anyway, it seems there are only 3 'B's in this film, as Gena, Regan and Katie are some of the bitchiest, most childish women I have ever seen in a film. Kirsten Dunst's character is uptight, incredibly rude and has a foul air about her. Lizzy Caplan is a drugged-up, unemployed skanky mess and Isla Fisher is a suicidal little girl who craves attention from everyone and anyone. They are unbelievably dislikeable characters and I consider it a plothole that anyone as nice as Becky would be friends with these people!

Exploring Music Theory & Education
The MyMusicTheory Blog

Here is a short list of some of the most useful or interesting websites I use in connection with music in one way or another. If you are studying music, teach music or are just passionate about music, you will probably find something here to tickle your fancy.

Many of these websites I came across by chance, using Stumbleupon for example. Others were recommended to me either directly or via posts in music-related forums. All of them have something unique to offer and are are worth a visit, and all of them are FREE!

So without further ado, in order of how much I like them personally, (totally subjective I know, but never mind!):

AAAHH!!! Underappreciated Monsters

HORROR

Halloween brings with it many traditions like dressing in creepy costumes, stuffing our face with candy and my favorite, watching marathons of monster movies!

Of course I adore the classics like Dracula and Night of the Living Dead, but I feel that with the recent glamorization of vampires and  zombies, several other movie monsters have been unjustly snubbed.

To make amends, I have compiled a list of the top five monsters and otherworldly creatures that are often overlooked.

The Magnetic Fields - Covered

Taking Cover -

A couple of years ago I posted an embeded Vimeo video entitled "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" which featured Nico Colaleos and Kali Fontecchio singing a heartwarming cover of The Magnetic Fields song "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" Unfortunately that video was pulled and - despite my efforts to dig up the footage - BlogDogIt is now left with a hole in the form of a dead link. :(

So I asked myself, "Should I do something about that missing video?"
Of course the only obvious answer was "Yeah! Oh Yeah!"

With loins girded, I set out upon a quest to find a replacement cover of this classic tune. I watched several videos; ranging from mediocre to downright painful. Of course there where live-set videos of The Magnetic Fields performing the song (in assorted venue.) But I wanted to replace a cover with a cover.

And then it happened...

I came upon what is perhaps the ultimate version of "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" It was smooth as silk (and twice as sexy) - Tracey Thorn and Jens Lekman totally confiscated the song.

What kind of a host would I be if I did not offer to share this with you?

Enjoy...

Jaws: Memories From Martha’s Vineyard (Expanded 2nd Edition)

Regurgitating bits and pieces of random web encounters with gadgets, movies, music, events, books, artists and all things with a "WTH"? or a "ooo"… factor to them.

Don Thompson: Factotum

I’m a ME transplant living in CA. I enjoy finding interesting, unique and often quirky things on the web. Since I have a deep love (addiction) for coffee ice cream, I don’t sleep much so I can usually be found shackled to my computer late into the evening seeking all things that I want but usually can’t afford! ( I mean really…a $10K exercise bike? I LOVE IT, but it won’t be sitting in my garage anytime soon!) I welcome all feedback and hope that you share this site with anyone you feel may be interested. Bear with me, I am learning as I go so there will most likely be hiccups along the way.

Mission Accomplished!

Red Bull Stratos

On the edge of my seat all morning... Anticipating the launch of the Red Bull Stratos... Looking forward to witnessing the spectacular achievements destined to put Felix Baumgartner into the record books... but alas, gusting winds have halted today's attempt at breaking several records related to a human falling from the sky.

The events of this morning - thanks (in no small part) to the excellent coverage of this historic event by RedBullStratos.com - brought to this remote observer, a mere glint of the emotion that must have surely gripped our hero, Felix Baumgartner. It had to be an emotional freefall of epic proportion.

Using "ALT+PrtScn" as my virtual camera I snapped the following screen-grabs as today's drama reached it's disappointing climax.

Wrapping it up.

It was Mission Technical Director, Art Thompson's voice over the radio that summed it up succintly:

"Another Day"

Great work guys we will see you then...

Congratulations Felix Baumgartner - Well Done!

Mission Highlights

Austria's Felix Baumgartner earned his place in the history books on Sunday Oct 14 after overcoming concerns with the power for his visor heater that impaired his vision and nearly jeopardized the mission.

Baumgartner reached an estimated speed of 1,342.8 km/h (Mach 1.24) jumping from the stratosphere, which when certified will make him the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall and set several other records* while delivering valuable data for future space exploration.
