A visit to The Great Mound at Mounds State Park, Anderson, Indiana. Finding truly ancient structures is possible even in the Mid-West. This location gives one a sense of mystical connection to the ancient Adena-Hopewell people.

Mounds have played a key role in my family.
One of the things that I most miss about growing up in Indiana are seeing the many Mounds.
My great grandmother Mary Elizabeth Deal Nugent was born near the Cahokia Mounds, but her family came right back to Shelby County soon after and have remained in that area until now.

I recall as a child going with my folks to see several of the Mounds in Indiana and thinking "Big Deal... Bumps of dirt..." As an adult I have an appreciation for just how awesome these ancient remains truly are.

A trip to Serpent Mound a few years ago sparked a new awareness of the many lost cultures of Native Americans. The Great Circle Mound is essentially in my back yard so I try to get there frequently. I only vaguely remember hearing of Cahokia Mounds but some quick research in light of your mentioning it has me thinking this would be a great destination for a camping excursion / road trip. [smiley:;)]

I was mortified to learn of your victimazation when in Indianapolis several months ago [ as mentioned in your blog post: http://gator-woman.blogspot.com/2013/11/crime-pays.html ] - In spite of that, I wish to send out a Big 'ol "Hoosier Howdy!" and remind you that for the most-part Indiana is home to some really nice folks - even if they sometimes move off to Florida and work to give voice to those of Gods creatures whos communication skills demand someone with your dedicated listening skills (as witnessed by your website Walking with the Alligators.)

Thank you for your warm welcome and especially for your kind words about our incident. I have been proud all of my life to be a Hoosier. I graduated from Shortridge and my huge family still lives all over Indiana. What happened in September at the Drury in Castleton, could never diminish a childhood of wonderful memories. The sad event is explained in "Letting Go" and is on both of my Blogs. We have been to Mounds in many states including Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Mississippi. Each has its own unique beauty and history. And yes, they were a crucial part of Native History in this Country, which may explain my deep interest in them. I have Shawnee Ancestors.
