How could a stint of playing Lego possibly get any more fun? Oh, there's a way... It took us about 45 minutes to shoot this 150 frames of animation. Playback is 5 frames per second. Papaw directed from the camera position and Brodyn did the animation work. A fun introduction to animation. Enjoy!

I love seeing individual projects like this where someone tackles a challenge like stop motion animation. For some reason, this reminds me of the Fisher-Price PixelVision that could shoot videos and store them on an audio cassette tape. Probably because tools like the PixelVision (or the older Super-8s) helped hobbyists shoot video without breaking the bank.

Yeah, when those PixelVisions first came out I wanted to get myself one ("for the kids".) They only shot black and white and still cost something like 200 bucks. I instead ended up trading a very-very nice Braun-Nizo Super-8 Camera for an Old (analog) RCA B&W closed circuit television (CCTV) camera and connected it to a VCR and that was my movie camera that saw me into the digital age.

This animation was shot with a digital camera (actually in High Definition) resampled in PhotoShop and assembled into the animated GIF(s) in ImageReady. Brodyn wants to add sound so I hope to release an mp4 in the not too distant future.

Brodyn did a great job thinking up a clever set of scenes for his demo reel. I like his addition of sliding along the floor as it adds to the character of the film. Well done!

Yeah, the PixelVision were a bit on the pricey side back in the day. Sadly, I didn't have enough cash flow back then to buy one as it would have been interesting to work with.

Your solution of acquiring an analog CCTV setup sounds like it worked well. The Super-8's that had single frame advance were nice but film is not exactly cheap or quick to have processed. Film, while unique in its quality, does allow a person to shoot and review immediately. There are definite advantages to digital or even analog tape based equipment when it comes to quick turn around.
