Would like to share my thoughts about the death of these light bulbs.
No one at the EPA, FDA or any other Government Facility has ever asked me what I thought about this.
I can tell you that I do NOT like it, not one tiny bit.
It feels to me like I am now living in a Communist country,
as this is being forced on me, with no recourse what so ever.
Here are the reasons for my objection.
I have many countries dwelling in my DNA and also some Native Ancestry and apparently one of these, has an issue with these new and in my opinion, dangerous bulbs.
We have had them in our home and I have reacted to them quite badly, getting nasty headaches every single time that they were turned on.
But that is not the most important reason for me to reject them.
What bothers me the most, is that when and if they are broken, you practically need to call a Hazmat team for the Mercury spill clean up.
Why on Earth were these ever approved?
Somewhere, someone is making a fortune on these new bulbs and we are the guinea pigs as to their safety.
Do people really know what is in these new, forced on us bulbs and what they can do to us?
Ten or so years from now, will these new bulbs be our generations agent orange?
They are truly not safe, in my opinion, and something in them makes me sick, so why on earth would I ever want to use them?

I certainly concur with your sentiments gatorwoman and thank you for offering such a thoughtful comment.

I have always been an advocate for energy conservation but find this whole incandescent vs florescent lighting topic just flat-out wrong-headed. I really don't know the complete story behind the dictate to ban tungsten lightning at the manufacturing/consumer level but find this very disturbing. If a product offers true advantages then, it seems to me the superior product will succeed and the inferior product will fail.

This is nothing less than a slap in the face of free market economics. If this travesty is allowed to stand one can easily imagine other products and services that might be summarily outlawed because of flawed logic and manipulative policy makers. This is just the sort of thing that would have been unimaginable 15 years ago. The take-away here is "get ready - the days of the internal combustion engine are truly numbered" - mark my words.

I suppose now they will have to use the new energy saving light bulbs. Cue strange alien glowing thing that isn't quite as bright and flickers all the time, but at least your ideas won't drain the electricity supply. No foot-long utility bills either.

Hi Vijay - welcome back :D

I have been wanting to do a video where somebody "has a great idea" and instead of the cliche light bulb, a florescent coil bulb (as illustrated above)appears overhead... It should flicker and blink then light dimly and slowly glow brighter (with a greenish hue.) The person responsible for the idea would be looking annoyed at the manifestation occurring above him and finally, as the bulb vanishes in a puff of smoke... our thinker utters "Screw it!"

Oddly enough, I thought there was even some modern evolution going on with the incandescent bulbs a few years prior to the phase out. If I recall, someone came up with the idea to create a secondary enclosure for the filament to further increase efficiency but I never heard anything beyond a brief mention. I guess the mandate steamrollered over the top of any potential R&D for improvements like that.

Now the question is how to heat my lava lamp when the bulb eventually fails? And let's not even think about what would happen if I had an easy bake oven - pitchforks and torches come to mind. :)

I do like the idea of improvments, but mercury laced CFLs are far from an improvement that I would hope for. Even LEDs have their problems and until the prices come down, they're way out of line in price. Like Kermit said, it ain't easy being green (although I'm not sure how green the transition truly is). :D

I heard (a while back) about a company in Germany marketing "HeatBalls" to get around the EU light bulb ban. A quick check on Yahoo yealds a nice article from the Matt Bowles Archive.

Below is a quote from a Reuters Article that reports this bit of "brilliance" (with a link to that article):

Rotthaeuser has pledged to donate 30 cents of every heatball sold to saving the rainforest, which the 49-year-old sees as a better way of protecting the environment than investing in energy-saving lamps, which which contain toxic mercury.

I am sure there are many applications where incandescent bulbs would out-shine these CFL...

In addition to the Easy Bake Oven and Lava Lamp (thanks Dale - it needed to be said) I would never think of using a CFL in a conventional oven or refrigerator. And what about poor Crush the pet turtle? What shall become of him as he basks under the cold green glow of a CFL?

I really cannot imagine using a CFL in a photographic enlarger so I will be looking to hoard some for that (and the safe-lights while I'm at it.)
