Is This Richesnay
Photo by Nenad Saljic / National Geographic Photo Contest

It's that time of year again - the middle part of March (in this neck of the woods) - when those of my clan begin to anticipate and watch for the Richesnay.

I wrote a rather lengthy post several years ago entitled The Meaning of "Richesnay",  but in the interest of brevity I will simply refer you to that post and throw out the question: Have you ever heard of the word Richesnay or anything even remotely close that refers to a similar concept?

Richesnay [RIH-ches-nay] - The sudden blowing, swirling, voluminous, late winter snowfall that surely marks the coming of spring.

TLDR;
I am trying to track down the origins of the word/concept "Richesnay."

Ring any bells?

BlogDogIt Note: I had the image above, just knocking around; not exactly sure where it came from, but it has been among the random "Perfect Timing" widget images. I had always thought that I would use that picture to illustrate a Richesnay post but after compiling this post I really did not want to use it without attribution. So I ventured out onto the interwebs and promptly discovered www.tineye.com.; a reverse image search (in beta) that functioned masterfully. I therefore recommend that you give them a try the next time you are looking for an images source for attribution.

While out blog-hopping I came upon the WomanBitesDog blog and thought "Oh my! That is even more unusual than man bites dog"... Of course, I took the bait. What I discovered was an entertaining, light-hearted and down-to-Earth blog by Lindsey Jones. The following is from her "About Page":

Lyndsey Jones is a journalist, playwright and comedy writer. Her debut play, Martini Bond: Her hunt for the spy who loved her mum – a James Bond parody – was one of the best selling shows at the 2012 Camden Fringe Festival in London. The show went on to enjoy a successful four-night run at the Broadway theatre, Barking and was also live streamed. Martini Bond is on at the Kings Arms, Salford, near Manchester...

...Lyndsey would like to share her experience of writing the play, producing it, watching her words come to life, and possibly flirting with e-publishing.

The rest I leave for you to [ read more... ]

The King's Arms (Ale House) website featured a synopsis for Lyndsey's play:

Martini Bond: Her hunt for the spy who loved her mum

Martini Bond: Her hunt for the spy who loved her mum

Martini Bond, brought up in a single parent household, is tracing her family history. After James Bond’s file was left on a train, Martini’s memories were shaken but not stirred. She had never thought of meeting her dad. Until now.

But he is missing presumed dead after an explosive encounter with Franken von Banken, a mad scientist. Franken has spliced the god particle with villain DNA and hopes to resurrect the world domination role that god is so good at.

Martini’s mission is to find her dad – and save the world – only she’s never spied, can’t drive or shoot to kill. But, then again, perhaps she’ll just go shopping, after all she never knew him. And the family motto always was live and let die…

Martini Bond, written by Lyndsey Jones and directed by Helen Niland, was one of the best-selling shows at the 2012 Camden Fringe Festival before transferring to The Broadway theatre, Barking, London.

I occasionally like to pop-in on Technorati.com to see how this blog is doing in the ratings. I know it isn't a contest but I would like to know if I am winning...

I decided to grab todays report for posterity and as a reference to those "authority" areas in which BlogDogIt.com is showing-up.

Perhaps some day I will discover what all these scores are actually trying to tell me but for now I am happy to take it to mean that in terms of life in the blogosphere, at least we have a pulse.

Me and computers go way back. My high school had a computer and a class. I did not take the class but I did use the computer room as a location for an amateur film entitled - strangely enough - "The Computer." I could not tell you what type of computer it was other than to say it was a behemoth in blue and a punch card system. This was circa 1975. A time when pocket calculators had glowing red LED displays and PONG was just hitting the streets. The world of computing was strange and new. You could not really say that I was "into" computers but it would be fair to say "we hung out." I intend to post to this blog on a somewhat regular basis. For my part I will post about things that interest me and things that may interest a certain segment of the internet at large. I would also like to formerly extend the invitation for you dear reader to register for an access account and join the fun.

Call Yourself A Nerd (Are you a nerd? )

Learn to Code
by

Bill Gates Chairman, Microsoft:
“Learning to write programs stretches your mind, and helps you think better,
creates a way of thinking about things that I think is helpful in all domains.“

In the current age and generation, you can not go a day without interacting with some form of computer. Whether it’s hopping online to check out Call Yourself a Nerd or it’s using your phone to get directions, technology has become ingrained into almost every facet of life.

I am always astonished when I’m told that someone does not know how to use some of the basic features of technology. I believe that computers are a necessity to become a more productive member of our current society, much like when cars started to be mass-produced at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, knowing how to drive means that you are independent and productive. I believe that learning about computers are the next step in that ideology and I am not alone.

Code.org was founded to help bring coding to the classroom since only about 10% of schools teach the subject. They just released a video with some of the most famous coders in the world recommending the trade.

James Dean's Bullfight

Bullfight - By James Dean

From the early 1980's to the late 1990's I spent a good deal of time in the dark. That was par for the course as a photographer in the good ol' Tri-X, Plus-X, D-76 days. Of course I am referring to the work I did as a Black & White Custom Photo-lab Wizard.

It was 1966 when Ray Bright and Ben Lawrence teamed up to start B&L Photographers, Inc. in Indianapolis, Indiana. Both gentlemen where sort of "left hanging" when their employer - The Indianapolis Times Newspaper - closed their doors in 1965 (much to the chagrin of their employees.) By the time I came on board in the 80's they where a rock-solid pillar-of-the-community outfit and landing a full-time gig with these guys was itself a brush with greatness - if it ended there. But the story continues...
