there are still so many helpersWhen I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,’ To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”

BlogDogIt may be a bit late to this party but having just caught wind of this video-gone-viral, I cannot resist the urge to keep the momentum going. Is this really the World's Biggest Pile of Leaves? Yeah, I'll give 'em that.

According to the Deseret News, Nick Garrett, Tyler White and Johnny Murdock collected an estimated 20,000 pounds of leaves to make a pile about 17 feet high and 60 feet in circumference behind a friend's house in Roy, Utah. Then, like any guys in their early 20s who concede they haven't quite grown up, they started flipping and falling into the pile from the home's roof..."No one got lost, no one got hurt," Garrett said. "It was all good fun."

World's Biggest Pile Of Leaves

17 feet tall. 60 feet around. Over 1,000 bags and 1 BIG JUMP!

Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well. DRAGON SPACECRAFT RETURNS TO EARTH IN FIRST OFFICIAL CARGO RESUPPLY MISSION TO SPACE STATION

DRAGON SPACECRAFT RETURNS TO EARTH

Dragon post-splashdown, 10/28/12

Hawthorne, CA —  (Sunday, October 28, 2012 6:48 PM),
Today at 12:22 p.m. PT SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft returned to Earth from the International Space Station, safely splashing down approximately 250 miles off the coast of southern California.

“This historic mission signifies the restoration of America’s ability to deliver and return critical space station cargo,” said SpaceX CEO and Chief Technical Officer Elon Musk. “The reliability of SpaceX’s technology and the strength of our partnership with NASA provide a strong foundation for future missions and achievements to come.”

Dragon departed the station early this morning with 1,673 pounds of return cargo including hardware, supplies, and a GLACIER freezer packed with scientific samples. Dragon is the only craft capable of returning a significant amount of supplies to Earth, and this mission marks the first time since the space shuttle that NASA has been able to return research samples for analysis.

The SpaceX recovery team is now transporting Dragon by boat to a port near Los Angeles, where early cargo will be delivered to NASA. Dragon then will be transported to SpaceX’s facility in McGregor, Texas for processing. There, the remaining cargo will be delivered to NASA.

The mission, called CRS-1, began October 7, when the Falcon 9 rocket launched Dragon from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. SpaceX and NASA are currently investigating an anomaly that occurred with one of Falcon 9’s first-stage engines during the launch. Analysis to date supports initial findings:  the engine experienced a rapid loss of pressure and Falcon 9’s flight computer immediately commanded shutdown, as it is designed to do in such cases. The team will continue to meticulously analyze all data in an effort to determine root cause and will apply those findings to future flights.

This mission is the first of at least 12 to the International Space Station that SpaceX will fly under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract.

Don Thompson: Factotum

I’m a ME transplant living in CA. I enjoy finding interesting, unique and often quirky things on the web. Since I have a deep love (addiction) for coffee ice cream, I don’t sleep much so I can usually be found shackled to my computer late into the evening seeking all things that I want but usually can’t afford! ( I mean really…a $10K exercise bike? I LOVE IT, but it won’t be sitting in my garage anytime soon!) I welcome all feedback and hope that you share this site with anyone you feel may be interested. Bear with me, I am learning as I go so there will most likely be hiccups along the way.

Any Publicity? ... Hooray for Space-X!

Having been an avid follower of the Space-X organization from its beginnings, and feeling much pride for them following last evenings successful (even historic) launch I was eager to add a post here to commemorate the event.

Thanks to the article featured on the Geekosystem RSS feed (recently added to BlogDogIt):  SpaceX Launch Has Engine Explode During Ascent, Proves Importance of Redundancy

My heart sank as I discovered the little publicized problems with this launch. I sincerely hope these event do not tarnish the reputation of the Space-X organization rather they should bolster their image as a company with the ability to push forward their mission in spite of these difficulties.

SpaceX Falcon 9 lost an engine on the way up; Dragon on its way to ISS

Last night (Sunday October 7), SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket with a Dragon capsule full of supplies on a mission to the International Space Station. The Dragon was deployed successfully (as were its solar panels to give it power) and it’s on its way to ISS.

However, not everything went as planned. One of the nine Merlin engines powering the Falcon 9 had a failure 90 seconds into the flight. It’s not clear what happened just yet, but there is pretty dramatic footage of the engine failure; in the slow motion video below you can see some sort of flash and puff of flame at the 30 second mark (I’ve set the video to start 22 seconds in):

You can see a bright spot glowing on the upper right engine, then what looks like shrapnel blowing back as well, so it appears something catastrophic happened to the engine. I can think of many things that could’ve caused this – a crack in the engine bell that failed when it got hot, a faulty valve, something in the pipes – but I’m just spitballing; hopefully the folks at SpaceX will be able to determine the cause from the engine telemetry.

The Olympic Opening Ceremony in London

The Olympic Opening Ceremony in London just ended as seven teenage British athletes had the honor of lighting the Olympic Cauldron.

The Cauldron, however, isn't really a cauldron. Sports Illustrated's Nick Zaccardi tweeted that the "cauldron is 200+ copper petals -- at least 1 for each nation. At end of Games, each nation takes petal, cauldron will cease to exist."

We have video [above] of the confusing, yet beautiful Olympic Cauldron lighting [above].

Muhammad Ali makes an appearance at the 7:55 mark of the video, David Beckham passes the torch to Sir Steve Redgrave (a five-time gold medalist) at 11:45, Redgrave passes the torch to the seven teenagers at 16:55, and the young athletes light the Cauldron at 21:35.

As confusing as it was, we have to say the Cauldron lighting is definitely worth your time. Watch the Olympic Cauldron lighting ceremony [above]:

Have you ever wondered how large your vocabulary might actually be, quantitatively? Visit Word Dynamo at Dictionary.com and take the Word Dynamo Challenge to find out.

It's a quick 10 word vocabulary test that will offer some insight into the number of words you might have at your disposal. I have taken it several times and each time the result is about the same. I get the sense that these results are likely to be an accurate approximation.

I Need You To Lower Your Voice!!!

Okay, I will admit it...  I fell prey to a billboard suggesting that I visit a particular website. In fact the billboard said little more than "nomorepu.com". I found it somewhat ironic that it was situated along the interstate near the landfill on the south side of town; it has been known to get quite stinky in the area at times.

I had no idea what the campaign was about but discovered after visiting the website that it was regarding Tidy Cat brand kitty litter. They have put together a clever website featuring the theme "Life Stinks? We Can Help."

Anyway...

They have a series of video shorts which are actually quite humerous and at the end of each they play a short outtake/blooper type scene from the shoot. The second in the series is called "The Lobby" and at the end of it there is a security guard that asks a lady to lower her voice. After I heard this I had to stop everything and extract the sound-bite. Watch the video now and download the sound-bite below.
