Welcome to the world of opticals

I found this pretty cool illusion over on opticalspy.com that showed the word "OPTICALSPY" written twice and partially obscured behind a chevron shape. The reader is instructed to identify the irregularity and that furthermore clicking the image would reveal the graphic sans chevron. I was impressed with the optical trickery and realized this illusion was a perfect candidate for my handy-dandy image swapping javascript snippet.

Always the "Helpful Hacker" - I assembled this demo to see if perchance this might be of interest to the editor of said source post. Sure enough the code has been utilized. Now rather than having to click the image to remove the chevron, simply hovering over it will remove the obstruction (clicking action has been maintained for the "touchy-feely" types.)

At first this sample code was visible only to registered users of BlogDogIt.com but since I recieved a "thanks for the code help" mention over there I decided to share this little bit of optical magic with my readers and encourage you to visit opticalspy.com for a truly extraordinary feast for the ol' ocular orbs.

I'm keeping my eye on opticalspy (you should too!)

Mysterious Properties of the Prince Ruperts Drop

Prince Rupert's Drops (also known as Rupert's Balls or Dutch tears) are glass objects created by dripping molten glass into cold water. The glass cools into a tadpole-shaped droplet with a long, thin tail. The water rapidly cools the molten glass on the outside of the drop, while the inner portion of the drop remains significantly hotter. When the glass on the inside eventually cools, it contracts inside the already-solid outer part. This contraction sets up very large compressive stresses on the exterior, while the core of the drop is in a state of tensile stress. It can be said to be a kind of tempered glass.

The very high residual stress within the drop gives rise to unusual qualities, such as the ability to withstand a blow from a hammer on the bulbous end without breaking, while the drop will disintegrate explosively if the tail end is even slightly damaged. [

Today I paid a long overdue visit to one of my favorite spots on the internet: Woodgears.ca.

Woodgears.ca

Woodgears.ca is a woodworking site like none other. Its' tagline reads: An engineer's approach to woodworking. Every time I visit Matthias Wandel's contribution to making the internet a worthwhile diversion (better known as his web site) I come away with an urge to dust off the workbench and put on my thinking cap. Today was no exception.

Marble machines are a perfect example of engineering and woodworking crossing into the realm of artistic beauty. The featured article was "Seven amazing marble machines by Paul Grundbacher." In this post Matthias shares picture sent to him by Paul Grundbacher (from Thurgau, Swizerland.) Paul's creations are as impressive as they are entertaining...

Paul: "This was my first try. I used a lot of ideas from [Matthias] (
Marble machine 2). I was very happy when I had it complete and working." [Click for Video]

Living Outside The Stacks

Pattern Mixing {In the Closet}

It was bound to happen, after months of watching other bloggers do it and do it well, I’ve finally mixed my patterns! I don’t know what took me so long, I guess it was nerves. We were always taught to never ever mix florals and plaids or stripes and dots.

Daenel - Full Length

But then we were also taught not to wear white after Labor Day and I threw that out the window years ago. So, you’d think I would’ve tossed this rule too. Maybe I’m a little bit more traditional than I like to think. shudder

Daenel - Detail

This pattern mixing worked for me because the main color of the cardi matched the accent colors in the tee. I don’t know if I could do pattern matching with mixed matched colors. Which is so odd for me considering my matching code goes something like this: “If you see the colors together in nature, you can wear them together on your body."

Alien Wars - By Brodyn
Brodyn's first animation project -
Directed by Papaw
[100px X 70px scaled to 500px X 350px]

How could a stint of playing Lego possibly get any more fun? Oh, there's a way... It took us about 45 minutes to shoot this 150 frames of animation. Playback is 5 frames per second. Papaw directed from the camera position and Brodyn did the animation work. A fun introduction to animation. Enjoy!

Beyond Mystery Is Knowledge If Sought.

Thanks to Amanda Wood at "Journey of Mixed Emotions" for the heads-up on the cool little web app called "Turn A Quote Into A Masterpiece" available at http://www.recitethis.com. This slick gizmo will let you make some eye-catching graphics from words you supply. The picture above features the Six Word Memoir that I concieved for Six Word Memoirs at Smith Magazine.
