The World's Smallest Movie

Published on Apr 30, 2013  IBM/YouTube

You're about to see the movie that holds the Guinness World Records™ record for the World's Smallest Stop-Motion Film (see how it was made at http://youtu.be/xA4QWwaweWA). The ability to move single atoms — the smallest particles of any element in the universe — is crucial to IBM's research in the field of atomic memory. But even nanophysicists need to have a little fun. In that spirit, IBM researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope to move thousands of carbon monoxide molecules (two atoms stacked on top of each other), all in pursuit of making a movie so small it can be seen only when you magnify it 100 million times. A movie made with atoms. Learn more about atomic memory, data storage and big data at http://www.ibm.com/madewithatoms

SNAKE - The Game Walk-Through

"...this animation looks like it comes from a Russian
Flash knock-off with the same general gameplay..."

...Sure, you do technically "lose" when every single section of the playfield is taken up by a piece of your snakey body. But considering that it's technically impossible to get a better score once you've achieved this feat, we think it's safe to call this one a "win."...

Spray Paint

Dale Harkness, on his blog - "The Hindenburg Principle" - recently featured several photographs of graffiti from around his city. Dale posited that creative graffiti (as opposed to the "gang-tag" variety) can actually serve to elevate otherwise blighted areas and even lift the spirits of those treated to these unexpected gifts from the "Urban Artist."

I remember this today because I discovered a related website that features several images of buildings and structures that have been given faces by Russian street artist Nikita Nomerz. I have posted here only a couple of the vast gallery of images entitled "The Walls Have Eyes: Abandoned Spaces Given Graffiti Facelifts" found on the website: environmentalgraffiti.com. I suggest that you check out these photos. When you do, imagine how those areas must have looked before the "facelift." Enjoy!

Woman Bites Dog!

While out blog-hopping I came upon the WomanBitesDog blog and thought "Oh my! That is even more unusual than man bites dog"... Of course, I took the bait. What I discovered was an entertaining, light-hearted and down-to-Earth blog by Lindsey Jones. The following is from her "About Page":

Lyndsey Jones is a journalist, playwright and comedy writer. Her debut play, Martini Bond: Her hunt for the spy who loved her mum – a James Bond parody – was one of the best selling shows at the 2012 Camden Fringe Festival in London. The show went on to enjoy a successful four-night run at the Broadway theatre, Barking and was also live streamed. Martini Bond is on at the Kings Arms, Salford, near Manchester...

...Lyndsey would like to share her experience of writing the play, producing it, watching her words come to life, and possibly flirting with e-publishing.

The rest I leave for you to [ read more... ]

The King's Arms (Ale House) website featured a synopsis for Lyndsey's play:

Martini Bond: Her hunt for the spy who loved her mum

Martini Bond: Her hunt for the spy who loved her mum

Martini Bond, brought up in a single parent household, is tracing her family history. After James Bond’s file was left on a train, Martini’s memories were shaken but not stirred. She had never thought of meeting her dad. Until now.

But he is missing presumed dead after an explosive encounter with Franken von Banken, a mad scientist. Franken has spliced the god particle with villain DNA and hopes to resurrect the world domination role that god is so good at.

Martini’s mission is to find her dad – and save the world – only she’s never spied, can’t drive or shoot to kill. But, then again, perhaps she’ll just go shopping, after all she never knew him. And the family motto always was live and let die…

Martini Bond, written by Lyndsey Jones and directed by Helen Niland, was one of the best-selling shows at the 2012 Camden Fringe Festival before transferring to The Broadway theatre, Barking, London.

Meteorite crash in Russia - UFO fears spark panic in the Urals. A series of explosions in the skies of Russia’s Urals region, reportedly caused by a meteorite shower, has sparked panic in three major cities. Witnesses said that houses shuddered, windows were blown out and cellphones have stopped working.

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers. A bright flash was seen in the Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Sverdlovsk regions, Russia’s Republic of Bashkiria and in northern Kazakhstan. At least one piece of the fallen object caused damage on the ground in Chelyabinsk. According to preliminary reports, it crashed into a wall near a zinc factory, disrupting the city's Internet and mobile service.

stumbling into friendships

I always look forward to the latest Mitchell L Peterson offering over on BuzzChomp.com and I have to say, he never disappoints his readership. Mitchell deserves all the exposure he can get. When I noticed a ping-back comment for one of his latest installments of "Dog House Manifesto" I was pleased to see that I am not the only one spreading the word, so I clicked the trackback link to Chomp the Buzz.

The following is a re-blogging from Thoughts on the Swing from Collina di mela by dario

The Unexpected Pen Pal

As we approach our pruning day in the orchard I was delighted to see a posting by a high school buddy of mine.  I have not seen Mitchell since high school but like many, we connected on Facebook.  The funny thing about Facebook is that you can spend a lot of time looking for people you would like to get in touch with only to figure out there’s not a lot to talk about.  Oh it’s nice to catch up, see postings and photos of their activities, and political views seem to get a lot of play, but direct dialog is often fleeting.  But there is the occasional gem.  I would liken it to finding that old pen pal you never knew you had.

Mitch is one of those finds.  We didn’t “hang out” in high school but we knew each other.  And if it wasn’t for this seemingly frivolous and globally engrossing concoction called FB, our paths probably would have never crossed again.  But they did.  Mitch has turned out to be a wonderfully talented writer who has been working very hard (as all artists do) to get his work noticed.  And he has a crazy warped sense of humor that I connect to in ways I don’t fully understand, other than I thoroughly enjoy our dialog and reading his work.  So while many dismiss Facebook as a waste of time because of it’s obvious lack of intellectual content (I’m speaking in ratios here), I’m convinced that it’s all worth it if you can stumble into friendships that surprise you with an unexplained depth.

The Dog House ManifestoSo back to the orchard.  I am including a link to a blog posting by Mitchell that paints a nice portrait of a grandpa and a grand daughter in the orchard, pruning on a cold winter day.  I hope you find it as touching as I did.  Nice job Mitch.  Keep ‘em coming.
