Exploring Music Theory & Education
The MyMusicTheory Blog

Here is a short list of some of the most useful or interesting websites I use in connection with music in one way or another. If you are studying music, teach music or are just passionate about music, you will probably find something here to tickle your fancy.

Many of these websites I came across by chance, using Stumbleupon for example. Others were recommended to me either directly or via posts in music-related forums. All of them have something unique to offer and are are worth a visit, and all of them are FREE!

So without further ado, in order of how much I like them personally, (totally subjective I know, but never mind!):

Balancing On The Roof
A Blog by Laura Modrall

AAAHH!!! Underappreciated Monsters

HORROR

Halloween brings with it many traditions like dressing in creepy costumes, stuffing our face with candy and my favorite, watching marathons of monster movies!

Of course I adore the classics like Dracula and Night of the Living Dead, but I feel that with the recent glamorization of vampires and  zombies, several other movie monsters have been unjustly snubbed.

To make amends, I have compiled a list of the top five monsters and otherworldly creatures that are often overlooked.

The Magnetic Fields - Covered

Taking Cover -

A couple of years ago I posted an embeded Vimeo video entitled "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" which featured Nico Colaleos and Kali Fontecchio singing a heartwarming cover of The Magnetic Fields song "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" Unfortunately that video was pulled and - despite my efforts to dig up the footage - BlogDogIt is now left with a hole in the form of a dead link. :(

So I asked myself, "Should I do something about that missing video?"
Of course the only obvious answer was "Yeah! Oh Yeah!"

With loins girded, I set out upon a quest to find a replacement cover of this classic tune. I watched several videos; ranging from mediocre to downright painful. Of course there where live-set videos of The Magnetic Fields performing the song (in assorted venue.) But I wanted to replace a cover with a cover.

And then it happened...

I came upon what is perhaps the ultimate version of "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" It was smooth as silk (and twice as sexy) - Tracey Thorn and Jens Lekman totally confiscated the song.

What kind of a host would I be if I did not offer to share this with you?

Enjoy...

Regurgitating bits and pieces of random web encounters with gadgets, movies, music, events, books, artists and all things with a "WTH"? or a "ooo"… factor to them.

Don Thompson: Factotum

I’m a ME transplant living in CA. I enjoy finding interesting, unique and often quirky things on the web. Since I have a deep love (addiction) for coffee ice cream, I don’t sleep much so I can usually be found shackled to my computer late into the evening seeking all things that I want but usually can’t afford! ( I mean really…a $10K exercise bike? I LOVE IT, but it won’t be sitting in my garage anytime soon!) I welcome all feedback and hope that you share this site with anyone you feel may be interested. Bear with me, I am learning as I go so there will most likely be hiccups along the way.

Red Bull Stratos

On the edge of my seat all morning... Anticipating the launch of the Red Bull Stratos... Looking forward to witnessing the spectacular achievements destined to put Felix Baumgartner into the record books... but alas, gusting winds have halted today's attempt at breaking several records related to a human falling from the sky.

The events of this morning - thanks (in no small part) to the excellent coverage of this historic event by RedBullStratos.com - brought to this remote observer, a mere glint of the emotion that must have surely gripped our hero, Felix Baumgartner. It had to be an emotional freefall of epic proportion.

Using "ALT+PrtScn" as my virtual camera I snapped the following screen-grabs as today's drama reached it's disappointing climax.

It was Mission Technical Director, Art Thompson's voice over the radio that summed it up succintly:

"Another Day"

Great work guys we will see you then...

Congratulations Felix Baumgartner - Well Done!

Mission Highlights

Austria's Felix Baumgartner earned his place in the history books on Sunday Oct 14 after overcoming concerns with the power for his visor heater that impaired his vision and nearly jeopardized the mission.

Baumgartner reached an estimated speed of 1,342.8 km/h (Mach 1.24) jumping from the stratosphere, which when certified will make him the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall and set several other records* while delivering valuable data for future space exploration.
