I heard (a while back) about a company in Germany marketing "HeatBalls" to get around the EU light bulb ban. A quick check on Yahoo yealds a nice article from the Matt Bowles Archive.

Below is a quote from a Reuters Article that reports this bit of "brilliance" (with a link to that article):

German heatball wheeze outwits EU light bulb ban | Reuters (via)

Rotthaeuser has pledged to donate 30 cents of every heatball sold to saving the rainforest, which the 49-year-old sees as a better way of protecting the environment than investing in energy-saving lamps, which which contain toxic mercury.

I am sure there are many applications where incandescent bulbs would out-shine these CFL...

In addition to the Easy Bake Oven and Lava Lamp (thanks Dale - it needed to be said) I would never think of using a CFL in a conventional oven or refrigerator. And what about poor Crush the pet turtle? What shall become of him as he basks under the cold green glow of a CFL?

I really cannot imagine using a CFL in a photographic enlarger so I will be looking to hoard some for that (and the safe-lights while I'm at it.)
